Welcome to Sustainable Options Limited


BACKGROUND
Sustainable Options limited (SO) is a development organization incorporated in Kenya, East Africa. It was founded in the year 2008 by Philip Ndichu (Kenya), George Mbatha (Kenya) and Ed Colina (U.S.A). All the founders are the company’s directors and are vastly experienced in sustainable livelihood systems, projects and strategies. They have all been principal players in the evolution and implementation of the sustainability program of the Nyumbani eco-village in Kitui district beginning 2005.


They have also worked with other development agencies in programs involving:
-Dry lands agro forestry systems and tree raising seedlings operations.
- Small livestock (free range chicken and dairy goats)husbanding and management systems.
- Growing strategic fodder, storage and blending.
- Apiculture.
- Water shed management (sand dams, wells and boreholes).
- Small scale trickle irrigated backyard gardens, agro production tunnels and greenhouses

VISION
To address livelihoods challenges by offering sustainable, efficient, intensive and affordable solutions and Services.

MISSION
To encourage and to enhance extension and diffusion of proven strategies and systems addressing livelihood problems in forestry, apiculture, small backyard gardens, nutrition and environmental projects.

CURRENT SERVICES AND PRODUCTS
Raising tree seedlings (indigenous and exotics) with a preference of Acacia and Melia families for supply to land owners and organizations interested in planting trees.


Establishing forests and small woodlots for land owners and corporate clients and helping in managing these woodlots through sustainable agroforestry and land use systems.

Promoting and helping in setting up of small trickle/drip irrigated backyard gardens and green house like structures to help peri urban dwellers with space to spare to grow their vegetables(organic and healthy).

Offering sustainable soil amendment solutions to agronomists through composting of wastes and blending of animal manure

Nutritional information and dietary counseling for optimal health (for communities and individuals).

Offering extension and information services to indigenous poultry farmers on vaccination, feeds and proper husbanding systems.

In apiculture we have 100 langstroth (frame) hives for sale to farmers marketing honey to organic outlets.

PAST INITIATIVES AND WORK IN PROGRESS
Establishment of 50 acres of a Melia volkensii (a fast growing hardwood tree) woodlot stand in the dry district of Kitui(insert pictures)

Husbanding free range chicken and dairy goats (insert pictures)

Blending a highly nutritious flour ration from Moringa oleifera leaves for the malnourished and the ageing (insert picture)

Designing and commissioning small scale trickle irrigation garden systems.

Operationalizing an artificial incubator for hatching free range chicks.
